Amazon, Twitter, Stripe, Lyft: Technology companies between dismissals and hiring freezing

The economic recession hits technological giants. As during the summer, several companies intend to part with their employees or limit their hiring.

Covered by the economic slowdown that is affecting technological giants, two companies in Silicon Valley, Stripe and Lyft, announced on Thursday, November 3, while Amazon freezes the hiring in their offices.

Twitter could do the same: according to information from the Bloomberg agency, confirmed by a source to the AFP, the new owner of the social network, Elon Musk, plans to say goodbye to half of the squad to reduce costs.

“Too optimistic about growth”

Stripe, a payment services company based in San Francisco and Dublin, has already discharged 14% of its workforce, explaining to its employees that it has “hired too much for the world we are in today,” according to a statement

Stripe has been “too optimistic about the short -term growth of the digital economy in 2022 and 2023,” he added.

The group plans to return to the employment level of February, that is, 7,000 employees.

The car rental company with Chopher Lyft announced in another press release the dismissal of 683 employees, or about 13% of its workforce.

Greater caution is needed

Amazon also highlights a “unusual” macroeconomic environment to explain the temporary suspension of all hiring in its offices. The group expects a growth from 2% to 8% in the fourth quarter, which is quite weak for its standards.

The freezing of the hiring indicates that the mood in the retail and consumption sectors is changing, said Neil Saunders, a distribution specialist of the Global Data consultancy.

Another technological giant, goal (Facebook, Instagram) is also step forward. Mark Zuckerberg, the head of the company, indicated last month that the workforce should not increase in the late 2023, not even decrease slightly. Goal had about 87,000 employees worldwide as of September 30.
