Video games are ageless. As proof: the return of the Paris Games Week is also the occasion for a virtual bowling competition for seniors. The Silver Geek association was thus able to decide between the finalists for its senior trophy, on November 3.
And it was the dean of the competition, Marcel, accompanied by his partner Monique, who won the competition. The two players, aged 95 and 70 respectively, chained strikes to beat their opponents in a game of Wii Bowling. “Very happy”, the Breton duo had qualified for the final of the Stunfest festival in Rennes, in May.
Seniors happy to play
Before a delirious crowd -and much younger than him- Marcel, cane in hand and cap screwed on his head, told BFMTV that he was “stressed to see such an environment”. The dean of the tournament, however, did not hide his joy “to see all these young people who are perhaps the age of his great-grandchildren.”
So facing the competing duo François and Roger, the pair did not flinch, lining up strikes to the cheers of the crowd.
A good exercise to age well
Silver Geek promotes video games for seniors with the goal of improving their health and well-being. Created in 2018 to perpetuate the action carried out since 2014, the association is now present in 30 departments. After the initial apprehension, the president of Silver Geek, Brigitte Tondusson, claims to see how much seniors “are happy” to play video games, especially during competitions.
“It is an action that generates mobility”, explains Brigitte Tondusson, president of the Silver Geek association, “You have to move, you have to concentrate too. They are essential exercises to age well, ”she stresses to BFMTV.
On the occasion of the Paris Games Week, the Syndicate of Leisure Software Publishers (Sell) published a study. This shows that nearly one in two older adults play video games.
