The update was expected and therefore a non-event: Apple has lifted the veil on iMacs equipped with an M4 chip. They are now available for pre-sale starting at 1,499 euros and in different colors (green, yellow, red, orange, blue, purple and the return of the silver model), for their launch on November 8.
An iMac built for AI
If it is not a chip designed for Apple Intelligence, its own generative artificial intelligence – which will not be launched before 2025 in Europe -, these all-in-one computers now have, as a base, 16 GB of RAM, compared to 8 GB . for the previous model 2023 (with M3 chip). Storage starts with 256 GB of storage.
We find the 24-inch 4.5K screen, but not the 27-inch model and its various accessories, now in USB-C. This is a major change for Apple, ending all of its Lightning accessories with mice and keyboards finally on USB-C.
The iMac is the second Apple device to receive the M4 chips that were first introduced with the iPad Pro in spring 2024.
Apple doesn’t talk much about power, but still advertises that it’s “up to 2.1x faster than the iMac with M1 chip in demanding creative workflows.” The company carefully avoids the comparison with the M3 chip, which does not favor it, and even goes so far as to offer a comparison with the iMacs with an Intel processor… abandoned since 2020.
Still, this update is welcome, even if Apple Intelligence will be compatible with Macs that run on chips other than the M4.
Starting this Monday, October 28, Apple has a week of announcements planned. After the iMac, we should be entitled to the new Macbook Pro M4 and a redesign of the Mac mini.
