Since its separation from Huawei, its former parent company, Honor is regaining color. Once a favorite of Millennials and other Gen Zs with its high-quality products sold at low prices, the Chinese company wants to reconnect with its former glory and show that it’s back, especially in the midrange.
The Honor 70 comes to materialize all the hopes of the brand in this highly contested segment. Unlike Huawei, the smartphone can take full advantage of Android 12 to animate it (with a proprietary Magic UI interface). But it also sees its bill increase slightly compared to the habits it had left, and it is positioned at a slightly more expensive price than its main rivals, the Nothing Phone (1) or the Google Pixel 6a (from 499 euros for 128 GB of storage and 8 GB of RAM). However, he pushed his recipe to justify everything and comes with a real idea in mind: to seduce video and photography enthusiasts.
Its advantages
Versatility in video and photo
This is the promise of the Honor 70 and the least we can say is that it delivers. When it comes to TikTok, Reels, Shorts and other video content to share in abundance on the networks, you have to be the best intermediary possible.
The smartphone has a 54 Mpx main sensor, a 50 Mpx ultra-wide angle (122°) and a 2 Mpx depth sensor for portraits. It thus demonstrates a certain quite appreciable versatility. It also has an effective macro mode for close-up photos.
In broad daylight and/or good light, the shots are excellent in all circumstances. When night falls and the light dims, the photos are still beautiful, but a little less detailed. Night Lighting mode fixes everything if you manage not to move too much. The AI also intervenes massively to beautify the representations automatically, in particular in portrait and selfie with the 32 Mpx camera (alone or in a group).
The Honor 70 can shoot up to 4K/30 frames per second or 1080p/60 fps. And it offers multiple ways to film: with two modules to have the front and rear of the device simultaneously in the same video, two shot values with the ultra-wide angle and the main sensor, a way to film in PinP (picture in picture ) or with preset modes. Storia therefore allows you to create short clips and the autofocus can film a scene by following up to 5 people.
The good find is the Solo Cut mode. This allows you to shoot a group scene and choose to focus attention on just one person. The Honor 70 will then film the entire sequence on the screen. Another smaller window appears focused on a selected person by touching their face. The device then knows how to duplicate itself to record two independent streams to its library. This has the best effect, even if the “foreground” quality could be better.
In general, the Honor 70 shines more with its performance in video than in photos where it sits at the top of the mid-range basket without being overlooked by the results of the premium models.
A stylish smartphone in hand
Honor has bet many times on the design of its smartphones and the new arrivals are no exception to the rule. The Honor 70 is elegant, with careful finishes, a brushed back that has the merit of not leaving fingerprints and colors with iridescent tones (black, green and silver, available only on the site). The transparent case provided will be perfect to avoid small scratches to which it is more sensitive.
On the front it shows a 6.67-inch 120 Hz Full HD+ OLED screen of good quality and very pleasant to use with its very thin edges. The punch placed in the middle to house the selfie camera is very discreet. The fingerprint sensor is located below the screen and is quite responsive when unlocking the phone. On the back, the sensors are placed in fairly large circles that can be divided up aesthetically.
The Honor 70 is a very high-quality smartphone, quite light (178g) and thin (7.91mm), which sits well in the hand and has the merit of offering a slightly different style. Only regret: it does not show any IP certification for resistance to dust or immersion. That does not mean that it is not, but it is better not to tempt fate.
One device for everything
If you excel in video and photography, the Honor 70 is not left out for your other missions. It supports all applications and efforts quite well thanks to its 5G-enabled Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G+ processor. It’s good for different tasks from photo or video editing, advanced mobile gaming, and quite graphics (see below for fans of Fortnite) or multiple activities that require it.
Its performance is more than respectable in this market segment and supports all handling with fluidity and speed of execution. The built-in AI is quite effective in adjusting tasks to user habits, suggesting and even saving power based on usage.
our reservations
Fast, long-lasting charging, but not wireless
It’s a shame for a mid-range device that performs almost flawlessly across its entire score. It has a fast charger (66 W) that allows you to reach 50% autonomy in 20 minutes. It takes almost an hour to recover to 100%. But above all, it ensures a good day and a half without hesitation, in medium use. Wireless charging would have been a nice touch.
Not necessarily made for gourmet video games.
Who says device for video says smartphone that appeals to rather young consumers. If the goal is to have a smartphone to play Mobile Call of Duty, Fortnite either Geshin Impact, you may experience some disappointments. When the game gets too intense, he may tend to stick his tongue out and get hot. If you’re not a fan of setting the game to max, it may work.
No additional storage possible
The Honor 70 is available in 128 GB or 256 GB of storage. But it is not possible to go further, because the smartphone is not equipped with an SD card slot (it is only dual SIM).
conclusion
The Honor 70 is a mid-range smartphone with serious advantages. It is based above all on video and a certain photographic versatility, but in the end what matters is the global copy. It is also efficient and particularly durable. Without excelling in one area or another in particular, he has the merit of knowing how to do everything. To recommend to those who want a good elegant compromise, especially if their price drops.
