“The rhythm accelerates”: the worldwide sea level has “increased faster than expected in 2024”

NASA announced Thursday that the worldwide sea level has “increased faster than expected by 2024” due in particular to high temperatures in recent months.

NASA alerts to the worldwide sea level this Thursday, March 13, which “increased faster than expected in 2024, mainly due to the thermal expansion of the oceans.” The American agency indicates that “the elevation rate last year was 0.59 cm per year, against 0.43 cm per planned year.”

“Every year is a bit different, but it is clear that the level of the ocean continues to increase, and that the rhythm is accelerating,” warns Josh Willis, a researcher at sea level in the propulsion of the NASA laboratory, in southern California.

1.5 million French in risk areas

The figures have been clear according to the American Space Agency: since the beginning of their statements in 1993, “the annual lifting rate of sea level has more than duplicate,” according to NASA.

“In total, the worldwide sea level has increased by 10 centimeters since 1993,” they observe.

This sea level elevation is explained by particularly high temperatures in 2024, “The hottest year ever registered.”

Why does the water level increase?

“The expansion oceans of the Earth continue the movement, reaching their highest levels in three decades,” said Nadya Winestone Shiffer, responsible for physical oceanography programs and the terrestrial system integrated in NASA’s seat in Washington. Specifically, when the water temperature increases, its molecules expand, thus increasing its volume.

If the figures may seem small, the increase in waters generates the destruction of coastal ecosystems or the immersion of certain lands.

In France, in the last 50 years, the French beaches have lost 30 square kilometers, according to the National Institute of Geographic and Forestry Information. In France, 1.5 million French are in risk areas. And for 2100, 500,000 homes could be overwhelmed by the waters.
