Artificial intelligence energizes organized crime, from the creation of child pornographic content to money laundering through cryptocurrencies, and advances such as quantum computing only aggravate the situation, warned in a Europol report on Tuesday.
This report is a “alarm signal” for the police, said the executive director of Europol, Catherine de Bolle, before the European officials of the agency’s headquarters in The Hague.
“This is a struggle for the rule of law, for our communities, for our businesses and for the future of our children. We will not let organized crime dictate the rules of the game,” he added.
Even more dangerous crime
The European Police Agency said in its report that criminals had taken advantage of the opportunities offered by AI as a “catalyst” to accelerate their activities.
“Fast technological advances, particularly in artificial intelligence matters (AI), transform the way in which the crime is organized, executed and hidden,” said Europol.
The use of AI and other technologies helps criminals in all their areas of activity, drug trafficking and human beings with cybercrime and identity theft. The generative AI allows criminal groups to achieve their objectives on a global scale and in several languages, and even generate images of sexual abuse in minors, it is written in the report.
“Explicit photos for adults can be manipulated to rejuvenate the person, or applications can ‘undress’ non -explicit images,” he said.
“The same qualities that make a revolution (accessibility, versatility and sophistication) have made it an attractive tool for criminals,” said Europol.
Facilities for criminals and difficulties for authorities
Technology also complicates the poorly acquired property authorities. The confiscation of crimes products stagnates around 2%, indicates that the police, this challenge, was “exacerbated by the growing criminal exploitation of digital assets.”
Criminal groups use cryptocurrencies to bleach and transfer funds, which hinders their traceability and confiscation. Technological advances will increasingly benefit crime, according to Europol.
Quantum it, in particular, will allow criminals to easily decipher current encryption technologies. Europol even mentioned the dystopian perspective of the criminal groups led by AI.
“The appearance of a completely autonomous AI could open the way to criminal networks completely controlled by AI, thus marking a new era for organized crime,” the report said.
