“A form of economic extortion”: the United States does not dig

The White House reacted to the colossal fines inflicted to Meta and Apple for the European communion. Fines judged as “a threat to free civil society” according to an American spokesman.

A new climbing in tensions between Europe and the US government. After the fines imposed in Meta and Apple, the White House accuses the European Commission of Discriminatory Practices towards US companies according to Reuters. A White House spokesman says that “this new form of economic extortion will not be tolerated by the United States.”

The sum is not trivial since Meta and Apple are forced to pay 200 million euros and 500 million euros respectively. The two US companies are accused of anti -comppetitive practices.

American companies directed?

A European regulation is markedly at the origin of these strong fines, legislation in digital markets (DMA). Upon entering into force in March 2024, the text is specifically intended to combat anti -comppetitive practices on the Internet with online GAFAM.

The fines against Meta and Apple spoke on April 23, 2025 after a year of investigation. Meta is accused of breaking a rule. Frame the use of personal data. Apple is aimed at abusive clauses in its App Store application store, to the detriment of application suppliers and their customers.

These sanctions are enough to disturb the United States that they are considered an objective for the European Union.

Goal and Apple may not be the only ones that undergo such sanctions. Google and X would also be in the visitor of the European Commission. This situation does not attract tense relations between the European Union and the United States, the relations that have deteriorated since the arrival of Donald Trump. After a first postponement, the United States still plans to apply 20% of customs tasks to the European market.
