Mark Zuckerberg will close the free school he had opened for the poorest

Open in 2016 for disadvantaged populations, the school will finally close its doors, due to lack of funds.

Philanthropy has its limits. In 2016, the couple formed by Mark Zuckerberg, co -founder of Facebook, and Priscilla Chan, opened a free school in California, allowing low -income families to benefit from education and early childhood care in high school.

A great promise that will not have lasted ten years, since the Board of Directors of the school has just announced its closure with the interested parents. According to the New York Times and the San Francisco standard, it is due to the loss of funds so far in the hands of the Chan Zuckerberg initiative, which has been made.

The establishment will close at the end of the school year 2025-2026.

Zuckerberg’s Flip-Flop in question?

A “very difficult decision”, explains that the school stops on two campuses, in a message that gives no more explanations about the reasons for this closure. Its main director of the strategy preferred to get in touch, specifying that a donation of $ 50 million would be made to “communities and families affected by the closure”.

When Mark Zuckerberg and his wife launched their foundation, the businessman promised to donate 99% of his fortune there, and establish school learning work, take care of the sick and the development of communities connecting people to each other.

A laudable objective that does not seem to have celebrated Donald Trump’s second mandate. The US president, who returned to the White House in January 2025, put the heads of large American technology companies, including Mark Zuckerberg. He drastically changed speeches a few months before the elections, heating the frozen relationships between the two men.

To validate this agreement found, Mark Zuckerberg has also put an end to several inclusive programs within the companies that he manages, but also of its foundation, while returning to the moderation of false information.

With San Francisco Standard, worried parents report their misunderstanding. For them, the school was “a gift for the community”, a community essentially composed of children in great difficulty, especially financial and school.
