If his French boss, Laurent Buanec, proclaimed out loud in February 2025 that the French audience of X was “upward”, has now dropped sharply for five months, reveals the latest transparency report released by the social network.
In the space of a few months, 2.7 million monthly active users have made the trunk in France, perhaps tempted by the alternatives that have taken muscle lately, especially the target threads and Bluesky.
In December 2024, there were still 17.4 million users, now there are less than 15 million, lower than the 16 million that were present at the time of Twitter repurchase (now x) by Elon Musk. A 10.5% decrease compared to October 2024.
Less than 100 million European users
In more general terms, it was the European Court that decided to cut the bridges with the platform, the base is now 94.8 million monthly active users, compared to more than 100 million in 2022.
France is not the only European country that has said goodbye massively, since Germany has seen 1.5 million people, Poland 2 million or Spain 1 million.
This European trend is not a coincidence and, above all, confirms that observed throughout the world. X regularly loses users. The reasons are multiple, but the repeated controversies of its owner who plays the conspirators, are certainly not related. The toxic atmosphere of the social network, not helped by a failed moderation, only 136 Francophones, earned him an investigation by the European Commission.
In an article published in September 2024, Financial Times had estimated that X had lost almost a fifth of its daily user base in the United States and a third in the United Kingdom.
