Who will replace Pope Francis? The answer to this question remains insoluble at the time of writing these lines, but one thing is safe: the faithful in Saint-Pierre Square can discover black smoke or white smoke on a gigantic screen with a radiant logo, that of Samsung.
The general public electronics giant did not sponsor this ceremony that brings together several thousand people in Rome. As the Cité-State website reports, Samsung made donations of several devices in December 2024.
High light screens to analyze the fireplace
Within the museums and Saint-Pierre Square, in particular you can find totems with touch screen to guide visitors, NFC readers (to approve tickets or badges), but also large LED screens.
The screens installed in Saint-Pierre Square offer “a brightness and a resolution of ultra-high definition”, allowing “high visibility” to the solar test in this square without any tree. For special masses and events, when the Pope appears on the balcony, it is easier for the faithful to see it. These are panels that belong to the XHB series, which are thin, light and energetically efficient.
They are the ones that make it possible to visualize the famous fireplace and notice if the smoke is black or black, and in this case, if there is a new Pope. Each screen installed, wearing the Samsung logo into a bright black, permanently disseminates the images filmed by the camera pointed in the chimney.
But visitors are not the only ones affected by this donation produced by the Italian subsidiary of the South Korean company. Within postal services and for pilgrims, computers have also been provided to make life on the spot, and LED televisions come to bring modernity inside stores.
Since 2023, Samsung has also signed a more technical association with the Vatican. Thanks to Galaxy devices (smartphones, tablets and computers), accompanied by its safe solution of Knox, Samsung, guarantees the safety of the Swiss Guard Pontifical to daily and online: “Thanks to the Samsung technological association, the smallest army in the world exploits technological developments to its advantage,” adds the company.
However, keep in mind that the devices given by Samsung will have no impact on the choice of the new Pope. As Tech & Co explained it just before the start of the conclave, measures were taken to maintain the secret and disconnection of the 135 cardinals currently in session.
