Pornography, harassment … Brussels opened a consultation on Tuesday to send recommendations to online platforms such as Tiktok or Instagram to strengthen the safety of minors, a priority shown by the European Executive.
EU regulations on digital services (DSA), which are completely in force last year, aims to better protect users by imposing a series of limitations on Internet. It requires in particular the implementation of appropriate measures to guarantee the safety of children and adolescents.
To help platforms to meet this obligation, the European Commission, now a Digital Gendarme, has prepared guidelines in the dialogue with the various interested parties: children, service providers, academics … The goal is to be published “in the summer,” said spokesman Thomas Régnier on Tuesday.
Age control, predetermined private accounts …
Before that, the commission initiated a final consultation. The public (including parents, experts or national authorities) has until June 10 to return the information.
Among the guidelines placed on a 39 -page document, the European Executive recommends in particular an age control to reduce children’s exposure to pornography or other inappropriate content. The commission recommends that children’s accounts are defined as a default value to reduce the risk of contacts without phrases with strangers.
To limit online harassment, it offers that platforms allow children to block any user and cannot be added to discussion groups without their explicit consent.
The commission has already opened investigations against Tiktok and Meta (Facebook, Instagram) as part of the DSA. He suspects the Platform for Chinese origin and the American giant of social networks so as not to act enough against the addictive aspect of their services or not protect enough children against several harmful content.
