With the closing of COP27 in Doha on November 18, climate change continues to worry the most fragile states. And the Tuvalu Islands are a direct witness since the archipelago could disappear by 2100, swallowed by the waters. To preserve this culture, the local government had the idea of replicating the country in the metaverse that would thus become the world’s first digital nation.
The islands of Tuvalu gather nine islands for 11,000 inhabitants. The government’s ambition is to migrate the entire administrative system to the metaverse, but also to digitize its history with its monuments. The first models have already been developed to give a first overview.
“We have to pioneer certain initiatives. We have about seven countries that have signed a joint communication with us, acknowledging and supporting the legal proposition that Tuvalu can continue to exist as a state even if we lose our physical country in the future.” Tuvalu Islands Foreign Minister Simon Kofe told BFMTV.
On the occasion of COP27, Minister Simon Kofe also spoke, as reported by the media. commitment, and insisted on the digital project initiated by the government “our land, our ocean, our culture are the most precious assets of our people. And to protect them, whatever happens in the physical world, we will move them to the cloud.”
The city of Seoul, also under threat, is working on a virtual ecosystem project where residents can do their paperwork online or participate in virtual events.
