A “big and beautiful law” that could make the teeth shiver. This Saturday, June 29, the Republican elected officials began the examination of the Megaproject of Budget Law sought by the president of the United States, Donald Trump.
The objective? Concrete some of the most important campaign promises of the US president, such as the extension of the tax credits adopted during his first mandate, or additional means for the fight against immigration.
But the text could also have unexpected consequences … in Wi-Fi. According to the edge, if the text is adopted, it could cause a slowdown in the Wi-Fi flow and, therefore, a slower connection.
Additional recipes and slower wi-fi
In fact, the bill includes a provision that forces the American Federal Communications Agency (FCC) to release part of its frequencies, and in particular up to the middle of its 6 GHz bands, and put them in an auction in two years. Mobile operators could buy them and use them to improve the flow of their mobile data.
This auction would generate additional income for the Government, thus compensating the fiscal reductions provided by the bill. But it could also have a negative impact on Wi-Fi speed when curling the 6 GHz band.
This frequency, used by the new iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Pixel, Macbook, Xbox Series X and S, some Samsung and LG televisions and many connected devices are less congested than the others. Therefore, it allows users to have Wi-Fi up to twice and a half faster. With the auction, this frequency would admit more devices, which would increase the latency of the connection and reduce the flow.
In a letter addressed to Senator Cruz, president of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Commission, and other members of the Committee, the Wi-Fi Alliance recalls that the 6 GHz band is “the basis of the development and continuous growth of Wi-Fi” and plays a central role in the skiller technologies of the next decade, in particular artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, the increase and virtual of reality. “
The letter was signed by Apple, HP, Comcast, Amazon or Meta. For his part, the president of the FCC, Brendan Carr, was favorable for the sale of certain frequencies.
