Users take advantage of the chaos of Twitter to post entire movies

Full movies posted in two-minute increments is the new trend for the social network Twitter, which seems to be having a hard time containing violations of its usage policy.

In full reform since its takeover by Elon Musk, Twitter has been a subscriber to daily controversy and dysfunction for almost a month. The social network is at the center of an unprecedented layoff crisis, and the latter has had a notable impact on the moderation of the platform.

In this context, the automated system for banning copyright infringing accounts also appears to be blocked. Users take advantage of the opportunity to post entire movies… in two-minute increments, the maximum video length allowed on Twitter. For example, there was the movie need for speed in a thread that consists of 66 tweets.

The account behind this tweet appears to have been created for the sole purpose of posting these movie clips. Created in November 2022, its description reads “First post was November 20 at 1:33am. How long can I last?”

The movie hackers was also available, along with full episodes of the cartoon sponge Bob. As the specialized medium Mashable points out, the best-known films were quickly shared thousands of times, and their visibility gained them. They have since been banned.

“RIP to [Fast and Furious, ndlr] tokyo drift which had been released in its entirety in two-minute increments.” The film was online for nearly a day, according to trade outlet The Verge. Avatar by James Cameron was also available on November 20.

The list of failures seems to grow hour by hour. a journalist from Forbes indicates that, despite deleting the tweets that contained this type of video, he was still able to access them in the mobile version of the application, which suggests that the deletions in question had not been entirely effective.

“We reserve the right to remove any content that violates the User Agreement, because it constitutes, for example, copyright or trademark infringement or other intellectual property misappropriation, intellectual property rights misappropriation infringement, impersonation of identity, illegal conduct or harassment” can be read in the conditions of use of the platform.

Some users are also reporting that the Twitter algorithm intentionally directed them to some of these movie “threads” that violate the terms of service.

“Twitter’s algorithm pushed me towards a full pirated movie while scrolling, and it’s very, very funny.” The netizen specifies that it was the movie Hackers, which is still online on the platform.

If the problem is not resolved, the platform could face legal action from the studios, while it is already concerned about several complaints related to the numerous layoffs that have occurred in recent weeks.
