A Californian jury estimated on Tuesday that Google should pay more than $ 314 million to Android smartphone users in this US state for collecting their data without a clear agreement on its part.
The jury agreed to the plaintiffs, who had made a collective appeal in 2019 on behalf of several Californians estimated at 14 million, confirmed his lawyer on Wednesday.
An abusive mobile data collection
The complaint accuses Alphabet, the Google parent company, of being responsible for a abusive mobile data collection system, without the knowledge of smartphone owners operating with the Android operating system, even when your device is inactive.
These data, then used for commercial purposes, particularly for specific ads, user packages also begin, denounced the plaintiffs.
In his defense, Google had challenged any damage caused to consumers for this data collection, provided to the company in the commercial user contract.
Google will attract
“The evidence presented during the trial revealed that Google secretly compiled a large amount of Android smartphone information and the mobile data unnecessarily consumed of Android owners without their consent,” said Glen Summers, lawyer’s lawyer, in an AFP statement on Wednesday.
For his part, Google said he was going to appeal the decision.
“This trial is a setback for users, because it is interpreted through services that are critical for the security, performance and reliability of Android devices,” José Castaneda, spokesman for the Mountain View group on Wednesday in an email to AFP.
