For the first time, the smartphone is ahead of the TV like the main home team

In the second half of 2024, 93% of households were equipped with at least one smartphone, compared to 89% for television, according to the new edition of the digital use standard published by ARCEP and Arcom.

A first. Television is no longer the first team in the house. It was destroyed by the smartphone, as revealed by the fifth edition of the digital use standard, published by Arcep and Arcom on Monday, July 7. In the second half of 2024, 93%of households were equipped with at least one smartphone (+4 points in one year), enough to make team No. 1 compared to TV (89 %%, -0.6 points), especially to watch the videos in the houses.

The smartphone continues its sustained growth. Among these contents are free television channels, video services such as Netflix or videos published on social networks.

The smartphone, the most used equipment daily

In addition to having destroyed television, the smartphone is still the most used equipment daily, 80% of the 12 years or more use it every day. It is the device favored by the French to connect to the Internet. Therefore, 89% of the population uses it to navigate the Internet, 85% to exchange messages through applications and 78% to call through applications.

Then we found the computer. If the daily use of the latter has decreased for three years (55% in 2024 against 58% in 2023), its level remains higher than the years prior to the health crisis (47% in 2019). A fact partly linked to teleworking during and after.

The repository also reveals that for the first time, the French use a connected speaker (14%) that a landline (13%) daily. More and more will be equipped with this device with a voice assistant (33%, an increase of six points in two years).

Excessive screen time

If the French have several devices (smartphones, computers, consoles, connected watches …), they are less equipped than before. While a house had an average of 10.3 digital equipment with screen in 2023, they only had 9.6 last year. Among them, the number of unused screens also recorded a fall, from 2.4 in 2023 to 1.8 in 2024.

On the contrary, almost half of the French esteem (42%) to spend too much time in front of the screens. They are even 19% to think that they spend too much time with them. You are more likely to recognize it: 34% of children aged 12 to 17 and 37% of young people aged 18-24 who spend more than three hours a day on screens consider this time excessive. A figure that falls to 23% for children from 60 to 69 years.

As ARCEP and Arcom points out, the French are even more likely to judge their excessive screen time when they often use social networks. 67% of people who spend more than five hours a day on screens and consult these platforms several times a day think of only 36% of those who spend so much time there, but without going to social networks.
