125,000 data gigabytes per second: Japan broke a connection speed record

In Japan, Japanese researchers have managed to convey more than 125,000 gigabytes of data per second, establishing a new world record.

This can give cold sweats to those who are still in ADSL. Japanese researchers from the National Institute of Information and Telecommunications Technology have managed to exceed a world record, transmitting more than 125,000 data gigabytes per second, at a distance of 1,800 kilometers.

A successful feat at the end of May 2025, which represents the equivalent of a 1st+15 gigabits connection per second, far (very) far from the 8 GB/s offered by the most efficient subscriptions and boxes in France with the general public. This would download the Archive website in just 4 minutes, write the specialized Livescience site. It is also 4 million times faster than an average Internet connection in the United States.

A new type of fiber adapted to telecommunications giants

To succeed, researchers have designed a new type of optical fiber, optimized for long -distance transmissions, write in a press release. The fiber used had 19 hearts inside it, against one in a classic connection, all compressed in a diameter of 0.127 millimeter, allowing the light to circulate without disturbances.

The record is surprising, but is specially designed for the development of fiber optic. The objective is to design technologies that allow the data to go faster and during a long distance. We are not likely to benefit from such a connection at home. These speeds are there to transport an astronomical amount of data throughout an entire country, even a continent. For operators, it is also a blessing: financially, this could allow them to optimize the cost of their infrastructure.

It is also towards the telecommunications sector to which Japanese researchers will go, to see if their feat can be transposed in a classic network. In any case, the development of a faster fiber has the wind in the candles: the previous record had reached 50,250 GB/second. It had been produced by the same team of Japanese researchers.
