Putting a PlayStation 5 in an electric vehicle is “technically possible,” says Izumi Kawanishi. The president of Sony Honda Mobility told the Financial Times. This joint venture between the automaker and the console maker was created for this purpose.
The goal of the merger between the two Japanese players is to develop electric vehicles integrating the entertainment expected for the era of autonomous driving. “Sony has entertainment content, services and technologies that move people,” said Izumi Kawanishi. “We adapt these elements to mobility, and that is our strength against Tesla.”
Stand out by offering content
Because in the line of sight, Sony Honda Mobility tries to compete with the Elon Musk brand. The billionaire’s vehicles already have entertainment-related functions. It is possible, when stationary, to watch movies or play video games on the Model S, 3, X or Y of the American manufacturer. The integration of Steam, Valve’s video game distribution platform, is even under development.
But for the president of Sony Honda Mobility (who has yet to find a brand name), “Tesla does not provide content services.” It is through this that the joint venture’s Japanese electric vehicles want to distinguish themselves. And this from the beginning.
Rather than equip its models with software integration after production, “we will develop a car as a device that will respond to the entertainment and network that we want to deliver,” said Yasuhide Mizuno, director of Sony Honda Mobility. The entity aims to market its first vehicle in North America by 2025.
