The European Parliament website is facing great access difficulties after being the object of a computer attack claimed by a “pro-Kremlin” group on Wednesday. On Twitter, the president of parliament, Jaume Duch, writes that “the availability of the site” is being “impacted from the outside due to the high levels of traffic on the network.”
Duch adds that the traffic originates from a “DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack”, a strategy that seeks to make it impossible to access Internet pages by overloading the server where they are hosted, caused by an exaggerated number of requests for access.
The European spokesman adds that the parliamentary teams are “working to resolve the problem as soon as possible.”
In a subsequent tweet, Parliament Speaker Roberta Metsola added that the attack was claimed “by a pro-Kremlin group” and is “sophisticated.”
“Our IT specialists are fighting against that and protecting our systems. This, after we proclaimed Russia a state sponsor of terrorism, ”he explains.
Faced with this scenario, Metsola says there is only one answer: “#SlavaUkraini”
The European Parliament has approved this morning a resolution that recognizes Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism, presented by the political group of the European Conservatives and Reformists (centre right).
The MEPs approved, at the plenary session in Strasbourg (France), a resolution denouncing Moscow’s attacks against Ukraine as “acts of terror and war crimes”, particularly against civilian targets and infrastructure, according to a statement from the institution.
Thus, the European Parliament classifies Russia as a State sponsor of terrorism that “uses methods of terrorism”, also calling for the adoption of a ninth package of sanctions against Moscow.
The resolution was approved by 494 votes in favor, 58 against and 44 abstentions.
