Death of Jean Pormanove: The story of a case marked by many defects

Strearness Jean Pormanove died on this live platform on the Kick platform on Monday. If the investigation opened by the Nice prosecutor’s office must determine the causes of his death, this case highlights the violence of the content that can be disseminated in social networks without moderation and with a financial counterpart.

The case has everything of a modern drama. Streameur Rapheël Graven, aka Jean Pormanove (or JP), died on Monday, August 18 live on the Kick platform. The 46 -year -old cameraman died after a live marathon of 298 hours, during which he was filmed 24 hours a day. The Nice prosecutor’s office opened an investigation to determine the causes of his death.

As soon as his death was announced, his eyes turned to the serpentines with which his life was generally made. Because for months, Narutovie (Owen C.) and Safine have mocked it, humiliations and physical violence, all filmed and broadcast live.

If the kick channels of the main concerns are not currently available, the Internet does not forget anything. Since Jean Pormanove’s death, many videos have been shared, from lives made in recent months in Kick. We see JP be beaten, strangled, insulted, in a sadistic “game” directed by its partners. Often, Jean Pormanove cries to stop. He also tries to defend himself, but is in numerical inferiority.

At the moment, there are no indications that these treatments have directly caused the death of the cameraman. But he highlighted the violence of the contents that can be disseminated in social networks by people seeking renown and money.

A “marathon” of twelve days

Jean Pormanove had launched into social networks with lives dedicated to video games. For about six years, he has been working with other cameramen, including Naruto and Sofine. Its contents were varied: Vlogs of travel, video games … but also concepts destined to humiliate JP and another participant, nicknamed Coudoux. Violence and mockery encouraged by Internet users in cats. Who seem to have risen in recent months to the marathon in which JP died.

For twelve days, the streamer and his teammates slept, ate and made different games and challenges while filming. On August 12, Coudoux and JP were dressed in a cape, a bib and a pacifier. On the 14th, JP was caught by the throat for having fought when you wanted to put a layer on the head. On the 17th, he was slapped several times.

When he talks about his desire to leave this marathon, others insult him. At the 239 Live time, Naruto grabs his mobile phone and reads a message that JP would have written to his mother, telling himself “kidnapped”: “I’m fed up that I want to obstruct the other who does not want.”

At 297 hours, which BFMTV Vio, JP appears asleep in a mattress placed on the floor, with three other cameramen. Round noise and a groan escapes from his throat. Then silence.

The experience stops when the spectators, in the chat, point out that JP no longer moves. At 298, Naruto gives him a bottle of water in his head. No reaction. He approaches him and discovers that he stopped breathing … and the broadcast ends.

Consent in question

Faced with these abuses, was Raphaël grave really consenting? This is what it will have to determine an open investigation by the Nice fiscalized on December 16, 2024 after the transmission of a Mediapart article on previous videos in which “the people who will probably be vulnerable were subject to violence and humiliations sometimes encouraged by the money payments of the spectators.”

Several times, Narutovie and Safine have assured in any case of transmitting sequences in which they make JP say he is giving their consent. At 254 hours of the marathon, Naruto asks JP to say that it is “normal” that he is suffering “for the game.” What it does.

And in July, they had been ordered to say “the Chamber of the face, there now, that if he dies tomorrow in the middle of Live, he is due to his state of shit and not us.” What he had also done, after he initially refused.

JP and Coudoux had been questioned as part of the investigation opened in December by the Nice prosecutor’s office. “Both indicated that they had never been injured, they were completely free of their movements and decisions and refused to be examined by a doctor and a psychiatrist,” said the prosecutor.

But an important financial link united JP to the two cameramen. According to Nice’s public prosecutor, Damien Martinelli, Jean Pormanove had mentioned “sums up to 6,000 euros” through a company that had created (Y) based on the contracts established with the platforms. “

A autopsy Thursday

Yes, with RTL, the Mother of the streamer said that her acolytes were like a “family” for him, his sister described his death as “intolerable.” “I wasn’t looking at everything, but I think I shouldn’t have died like this, he died of exhaustion. What he experienced is unacceptable,” he said Wednesday.

Me Yassin Sadouni, lawyer of Owen C., aka Naruto, said in BFMTV on Tuesday that all the violence he suffered was “written” and that everything would be “staging.” Naruto “is nothing there and the investigation will determine it,” he adds, while he presents that Jean Pormanove suffered “heart failures.”

The good judicial police, to whom investigations have been entrusted, will have to determine whether the abuse suffered by these twelve days has a link with his death. This investigation has just begun and police custody has not been decided at this stage.

“Several audiences of people present at the time of death were made without this stage, they did not give an orientation about the causes,” said the public prosecutor on Thursday. “Numerous seizures of equipment and videos have also been made in particular to specify the events that occurred upstream of death and it is likely that it has been able to contribute to it,” he added. An autopsy must be done on Thursday morning.

The kick platform indicated

The death of the streamer has highlighted months of violent videos broadcast live on the Kick platform. JP originally transmitted their lives on Twitch. But since 2022, after being banished several times from Twitch, JP had gradually changed to kick, whose moderation is lighter. He was followed there for more than 150,000 accounts

“Kick did his business (…) about the absence of real moderation with, behind, an important remuneration for the people in question. And there, for Jean Pormanove, for example, we had an important remuneration and the people who gave to see this type of content,” he deplored on Wednesday in BFMTV, deputy PS Arthur Delaport Influencers in 2023. “regular” the “economic model” of the social network.

In addition to letting these contents flourish, Kick presents them in their social networks, in publications suppressed since the death of Jean Pormanove. This Thursday, in X, the platform announced that “all co-series who had participated in this live broadcast were banished waiting for current research.”

“We are committed to collaborating with the authorities as part of this process. In addition, we have finished our collaboration with the former French social media agency and we carry out a complete review of our French content,” he added.

The Government wants “explanations”

A reaction published after that of the French government, which aimed directly to kick. “I continued the Arcom and made a report on Pharos. I also contacted the managers of the platform to obtain explanations,” said the minister’s delegate in charge of Digital, Clara Chappaz. “The responsibility of online platforms on the dissemination of illicit content is not an option: this is the law. This type of failure can lead to the worst and does not take place in France, in Europe or other places,” he added.

However, the French authorities had not announced measures against the platform until then, despite the alerts they received on the case of Jean Pormanove and its partners. Mediapart says that he contacted Clara Chappaz’s office in 2024 on this case, to which the media dedicated an investigation published in December. This Tuesday, Mediapart had not received an answer.

Arch, the French public authority for audiovisual regulation, did not act before the death of the streamer. “There were failures in public action from the Arcom, which had been seized several months ago, and for LDH, and by MediapartHe was not sufficiently reactive, “said Deputy Arthur Delaporta in BFMTV this Thursday.

But the Calvados deputy also insisted on the few means assigned to the ARCH to regulate this type of content. “They do what they can. They have 23 people for surveillance and broader sanctions in digital networks, so it is obviously insufficient compared to the scope of the missions that are theirs,” he explained in BFMTV.
