Tablet, smartphone… At 2 years old, a quarter of children are already exposed to screens

While it is recommended not to expose children under the age of three and to limit use thereafter, a large proportion of young children use screens regularly and for prolonged periods.

Recommendations far from being respected by all. Either health authorities recommend not exposing the little ones to screens, at 2 years old one in four children already has access to them, according to a study published this Tuesday by INSEE. This is related for the first time to the use of computers, tablets and smartphones, excluding television use because it is already well documented.

According to the INSEE, at the age of 2, 27% of children already use these screens, with variable intensities: 22% are exposed in this way for less than half an hour a day, 4% between 30 and 60 minutes and 1 % already more than a year ago. hour.

From the age of three, specialists recommend familiarizing children with screens such as tablets, telephones, computers, while limiting their uses. But if almost half of the children (46%) of five and a half years do not have access to it, at least in the family environment, 10%, on the contrary, dedicate more than an hour a day -that is, a very high exposure-, INSEE notes.

The study also shows a strong reproduction of parental behavior by children, with notable disparities depending on the families’ social and cultural background: Children from more working-class backgrounds are more likely to be exposed for a long time.

Within the same siblings, the study also points out that the older ones tend to be the least exposed to screens because parents supervise their behavior more than that of the younger ones. These elderly are ultimately even less exposed than only children.
