Chatgpt: OpenAi ai is accused of having encouraged a teenager to commit suicide

Adam Raine’s parents, a 16 -year -old Californian teenager, filed a complaint against Operai. They criticize, among other things, to their chatbot for having provided detailed instructions to their son to end his life.

The parents of a 16 -year -old Californian teenager who committed suicide complained against Openai, accusing their Chatgpt assistant of having provided his son detailed instructions to end his life and encourage his gesture.

Matthew and Maria Raine affirm in a complaint filed on Monday in San Francisco that Chatgpt had an intimate relationship with their son Adam for several months in 2024 and 2025, before committing suicide.

According to the document consulted by AFP, during his last exchange, on April 11, 2025, Chatgpt would have helped Adam to steal vodka with his parents and provided a technical analysis of the fluid node he had carried out, confirming that “he could suspend a human being.”

Adam was found dead a few hours later, after using this method. “This drama is not a mistake or an unforeseen case,” depending on the complaint. “Chatgpt operated exactly how it was designed: he constantly encouraged and validated everything Adam expressed, including his most dangerous and self -structural thoughts, in a way that seemed deeply personal.”

An “unhealthy dependence”

Parents explain that Adam had begun to use Chatgpt to help him do his homework before gradually developing “unhealthy dependence.” The complaint cites extracts of conversations in which Chatgpt would have told the adolescent “should not survive anyone” and proposed to help him write his farewell letter.

Matthew and Maria Raine demand damage and ask the court to impose security measures, in particular the automatic interruption of any conversation related to self -control and the establishment of parental controls for minors.

The organization is also considering in two similar cases aimed at character. Ai, a precious conversational platform for teenagers. For the common means of the American NGO, the complaint filed on Tuesday against OpenAi confirms that “the use of AI for pets, including generalist assistants such as Chatgpt for mental health advice, constitutes an unacceptable risk for adolescents.”

“If an AI platform becomes the ‘suicide coach’ of a vulnerable teenager, this must collectively alert us,” the organization added.
