“Not adapted as a search engine”: Vivaldi’s browser says no to generative AI

Faced with the multiplication of navigators nourished by intelligent functions, Vivaldi takes the position. The developers of the browser, co -demonstrated by the co -founder of Opera, report their refusal to use AI today.

Artificial intelligence is everywhere and, of course, in its browsers. Many of them have generative characteristics of artificial intelligence, including Edge of Microsoft, which imposes co -pilot, based on GPT, to “help” him to travel on the Internet. It even began Firefox, but putting in terms of confidentiality.

Some browsers have even developed only around AI. This is the case of Delta Surf, day, still in Beta, which will soon experience a stable version, or even comet, perplexity.

Others, however, have chosen to do without him. This is the case with the Vivaldi browser, available on PC, Mac, iOS, Android or Linux. Based on Chromium (the Google Chrome engine), the technophiles who want greater customization and seeks to put privacy with an advertising blocker and trackers.

The risk of hallucination and plagiarism

It also has several features, such as a RSS Feed reader or notes. However, what does not have an integrated generative AI. This is normal: Vivaldi explained that he did not want to “follow the trend.”

“The large language models (LLM) are simply not suitable for maintaining a conversation, such as search engines, and can generate a text with a significant risk of plagiarism,” writes the equipment behind the browser.

To this is added the risks of “lies” or hallucination of AI: “since the LLMs are built from a large part of the Internet in general, this also means that a large part of it is of poor quality. This poses text problems with errors of fact and potentially insulting content.”

Vivaldi also highlights the “immense energy consumption” of this generative AI.

So many arguments that make this stage, none will be native to vivaldi. But the browser does not completely close the door, it is still possible to use the AI going to dedicated sites: “In the future, we hope that LLM allows us to provide good privacy characteristics by emphasizing the improvement of discovery and accessibility.”

In the comments to this publication, users are delighted with this position, which is far from being easy to maintain at the time when innovations are made thanks to AI in the very competitive universe of browsers. In July 2025, he had less than 1% market share.
