Like their predecessors, Pixel 10 are excellent fotophones. But it can be difficult for some to take beautiful photos. Google has the solution: the photo coach. This is a function designed specifically for beginners in photography.
He “will teach you all the bases while inspiring you to capture images in a completely new way,” says the company in a blog article. This, using Gemini to analyze the scene through the photo sensors and then make suggestions about the frame or mode to use to help the user take “excellent photos” and improve their skills, even according to Google. But what happens?
A sometimes misleading inspiration
To activate the photo coach, simply press the camera icon in the upper right in the application of the camera. Then ask what the user wants to do, offering several angles for the cliché. It only remains to choose between these options, or press another called “find inspiration.” It provides other ideas, but can also get away from reality.
With the photo above, she, for example, offered us a “zoom in a perfect rose”, with a result that seems to have been generated by artificial intelligence and that is impossible to obtain.
The photographic coach can also be wrong during his analysis, since, in one case, he identified a dead sheet as a butterfly. Here we touch the limits of object recognition and these few false steps.
Useful tips, and not only for beginners
Once the desired option has been selected, the function guides us step by step with instructions in several stages, in addition to the final result that appears in the lower left. Change the smartphone in the landscape, use the portrait mode, incline the smartphone slightly, zoom, bring the topic about … These tips may seem generic, but they can be useful for beginners.
It is also possible that people who know in photography find them useful. This was our case when the photo coach suggested to use the portrait mode for objects such as figures and flowers. An excellent way to get a beautiful bokeh, which allows the subject to get better.
Similarly, when he advised us to include “the bank and the way” in the photo above to “add depth to the scene.”
A zoom not always clear
But even without this photo coach, Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro offer magnificent shots. The first is now equipped with a triple photo sensor in the back, with the addition of a teleobjective lens X5 (optics) with a zoom of up to X20 (digital) in high resolution that does not disappoint.
However, the result is not always there, as shown in the images below. If the telephoto lens allows you to better see the arch of defense triumph, the photo is not very clear and the AI has some difficulties in completing the details of the buildings at the ends.
The quality is also not there with the Teleobjective lens Pixel 10 Pro that can now reach X100 in high resolution, where Pixel 9 was limited to X30. In addition to the lack of sharpness, it is difficult to keep your hand stable, especially because you must move a yellow rectangle in a small square in the upper right to choose the central element.
Always with the Arc de Triunfe, go to X100 allows you to at least know that there are people at the top.
Already offering very good fotophones, Google goes even further with a photo coach to help the user improve, even when you know a little. But unfortunately we are not immune to some failures with the AI that is far from perfect. With both this guide and with the zoom in Pixel 10 and in Pixel 10 Pro.
And the rest
- Design and screen. In addition to the photo, Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro are very good smartphones. If its design does not change compared to its predecessors, that does not bother. Nice to take in hand, the pixel offers quality OLED screens, either to read, games or video. The Pixel 10 Pro is, logically, brighter than that of Pixel 10 (up to 3,300 nits against up to 3,000 Nits), but both are legible in all circumstances, even in the sun.
- Performances. The two smartphones are equipped with the same processor, the G5 tensioner, which executes all the functions of AI offered for productivity and photo. However, it is regretted that many of them are not available in France.
If Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro are housed in the same brand, their performance is not the same. It is observed in particular when a large number of applications is open, the first is a bit slower for the displacement than the second without being disturbing. The two models are also heated when asked for a long time, especially in the game, without it being annoying. - Autonomy. Finally, the two smartphones do not disappoint. We go far beyond the day with conventional use (social networks, photos, games, internet …). In Pixel 10 as Pixel 10 Pro, we arrive at the day and a half of use without problem, or even a little more.
Conclusion
If Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro are not a revolution in terms of design, they are still a success, especially for the photo. But we are not overcome at the screen level, autonomy or performance. However, we regret that Google, who continues to bet on AI in these smartphones, deprives France of several functions that could have further improved the experience. We will comfort ourselves by saying that they should arrive later and welcome that Google ensures seven years of Android and Security updates.
