A spectacular total lunar eclipse, called “Blood Moon”, will take place on Sunday, September 7. This is the second phenomenon of the genre of the subsequent year observed in March, which cannot be admired in the same way worldwide.
A moon in the shadow of the earth
A total lunar eclipse occurs thanks to a movement game between planets and satellites. The earth must pass between the moon and the sun, projecting its shadow on the lunar surface.
“The inclined orbit of the moon prevents us from attending a total lunar eclipse every month during the full moon phase. But, approximately three times a year, orbital mechanics combine to align the earth, the moon and the sun,” specifies the space.com site.
The lucky ones who can see it will notice that the moon will take a red tone when sliding in the shadow of the earth. This brightness comes from the diffusion of Rayleight: the blue wavelengths of sunlight are diverted by the atmosphere of the earth and the red wavelengths, which are longer, can pass.
How to observe the total lunar eclipse?
This blood moon will begin this Sunday at 3:28 PM GMT, 5:28 PM in Paris. The shadow of the earth will completely cover the moon about two hours later, and the phenomenon will last 82 minutes.
If each phase of the total lunar eclipse will take place at the same time for all, everyone will observe this cosmic show from different angles, according to the position of the moon on the horizon and according to their own location.
You can admire all this rare moment, subject to the presence of few clouds, in the territories of the Indian Ocean, such as Mauricio, Meeting, Seychelles or the Maldives. However, it will only be perceptible from Europe, specifies the Paris Observatory.
To discover what will be visible according to its location, a platform has been configured. Different observatories will transmit the live program, such as the virtual telescope project. The images will be transmitted from 7:45 pm
