The vast majority of voters in a poll released by Twitter’s new boss and owner, Elon Musk, said they favored reinstating the platform’s suspended accounts.
72.4% of the approximately 3.16 million people who spoke answered “yes” to Elon Musk’s question, who asked if Twitter should offer a “general amnesty to suspended accounts as long as they haven’t broken the law or sent spam outrageously.”
The leader did not immediately react on Thursday after the results of his poll.
He had already consulted Twitter users to decide if Donald Trump could return to the platform. The former US president had been banned from the social network after the assault on the Washington Capitol in January 2021 due to risk of violence.
Donald Trump’s tally was reset after a narrow majority (51.8%) of 15 million voters voted for the Republican billionaire’s return.
Elon Musk’s use of polls to define certain directions for Twitter goes against a commitment expressed shortly after the company was taken over.
Disappearance of the “Council”
Indeed, the Tesla boss had announced the imminent formation of a “council of moderation with very diverse points of view.”
But the richest man on the planet went back on this promise by accusing “social + activists + and politicians” of looking to “kill Twitter by drying up our ad revenue”, which represents 90% of the company’s revenue.
This strategy is equivalent, according to the tempestuous businessman, to a breach of the agreement to establish a council of elders.
Several major brands, including Volkswagen, General Motors and General Mills, have announced that they are halting advertising spending on Twitter since Musk acquired it.
