Apple iPhone Air: its disassembly reveals a battery that occupies the entire space and a surprisingly repairable phone

The repair specialist report, Ifixit, shows that, despite its delicacy, the iPhone air is not the most difficult Apple smartphone.

Like its robustness, the iPhone air continues to surprise a few days after its launch. Apple’s last engineering feat is surprised by his delicacy, but even his marketing, it was very difficult to know if it was easy to repair.

It is now made with the publication of a first Iphixit report. The repair specialist “To do It Yourself” shows that, despite delicacy, which is its main characteristic, the iPhone air is made to last and is much less difficult to repair it.

Robustness to almost any test

With 0.56 cm thick, iPhone air could be easily folding. But like several videos on YouTube, and some Apple demonstrations, have demonstrated it, the presence of a titanium frame comes from which everything is particularly solid and flexible. A video of Jerry Rig everything is the most concrete test of this: a mechanical flexion of 100 kilos was needed before the phone is broken. Before that, he folded, before finally recovering his original form, without causing damage to the whole.

A possible feat by the internal organization of essential components designed by Apple. The motherboard is placed at the top, of the small mound that houses the photo module. The battery is contained in a steel shape. To contain it as much as possible and guarantee its resistance. It occupies most of the iPhone air box.

This component distribution facilitates repair. Apple has made a broad effort so as not to be imponed again to make the repair complicated, if not impossible, from the iPhone 14, the Cupertino giant has made great efforts in this area, which allows the components to be accessed on both sides of the smartphones, front and rear. In the iPhone air, we find the electrochemical adhesive introduced in the iPhone 16, which allows you to easily eliminate the battery.

Ifixit also explains that certain elements of the iPhone can be easily extracted, such as the USB-C port, 3D printed to be quite well, provided that this time eliminates some screws and paste with the appropriate tools.

A satisfactory repair score

Another element to consider: the software block of the spare parts. It was one of Apple’s great specialties: if we changed certain “marked” parts for something unofficial and outside the company’s repair network, this could lead to the loss of certain features such as Faceid or battery monitoring.

If it is always the case for some of them, Apple, however, made the supply of spare parts more accessible.

At the end of this first report, Iphixit offers a 7/10 note in repair in the iPhone air. A good score, similar to those of the “classic” iPhone, such as the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 15, and even higher than the Google Pixel 8. Keep in mind that, depending on the European qualification system, the Air iPhone obtains a C for its repair classification, as well as the iPhone 17, 17 PRO and Pro Max.

To return to the Iphixit note, they are especially two points more than the S25 EDGE Galaxy, by Samsung, Apple’s main competitor in the segment of ultrafine smartphones. At that time, Ifixit had received the efforts of the South Korean manufacturer to allow the replacements of certain critical pieces, such as the battery or the USB-C port. However, the note was dedicated to an abusive use of adhesive.
