“It’s our only life. I’m not going to spend it on Tiktok”: with the trend of the curriculum, Americans invent their task to avoid “brain rot”

In Tiktok, Internet users are creating reading programs and invent the task to improve their general culture. With an objective: fight against infinite displacement.

This year, students are not the only ones who immerse their heads in the lessons. In the United States, some Internet users are inventing lessons and tasks to improve their general culture.

For several days, the study plan (school program in English, editor’s note) has been a success among users on Tiktok. The principle is simple: instead of moving endlessly in the application of short videos, Internet users create reading or learning on different topics. And above all, they film everything for their subscribers. A kind of return to school 2.0.

It all started with Elizabeth Jean’s videos. Last August, the young woman had fun explaining to her subscribers that she was creating a personal cultural program every month. Each month select some topics you want to discover and several books or articles in relation.

Quickly, the video exceeded 700,000 views. Then the young woman continued. For example, astrology, pastry, dwarfs or the evolution of modern epidemiology were reported.

Learn without university pressure

Since then, several Internet users have been inspired by their programs. Some try to learn the piano. Others a new language in self -confidence. But here, no qualification system or a teacher that imposes ship readings. Internet users are students and teachers and decide what they are studying. This is, for example, the case of Marjorie cozy content designer.

Therefore, the young woman prepared a program to develop one of her long data interests: manual arts around fabric and cables. “I’ve always been very interested in sewing and weaving … So I decided to create my own structured program around the history of fiber arts,” he summarizes. There were four months to finish a program that includes six pounds and several personal tests.

For his part, Gianna Jackson created a personalized program organized in “units” of study. This includes interior decoration, astrology or neuroscience. “It’s our only life. I’m not going to spend it on Tiktok,” he tells Teday.com. “I will learn things that inspire me.”

Emma-Louise, another designer, built its program around five main themes: finance, career, health and well-being, mental state and general knowledge. But he has also created complete modules about Taylor Swift’s commercial strategy.

“I have always had many problems to concentrate and appreciate learning when I felt that I was forced to learn a topic that would not interest me. That is why this trend seems very refreshing,” he says. The young woman gains school tasks or exits to maintain her school rhythm.

Fight against “brain rot”

Therefore, the trend allows fighting “rot brain” (or “brain rot”, editor’s note). The expression, the chosen news of the year by the University of Oxford, defines “mental degradation linked to excessive consumption of low quality digital content.” For example, by displacing users indefinitely and chaining stupid videos. According to Oxford University Press, its use increased by 230% between 2023 and 2024.

According to doctor Paul Wright, main vice president of the Nouvance Health Neuroscience Institute, “brain rot” is not a medical diagnosis. However, too much time dedicated to a screen can “disturb our concentration, our mood and our dream.” Replace the time spent on a screen with learning activities can help fight these symptoms.

Some Internet users who have adopted the trend of the curriculum have noticed benefits in their brain. This is the case of designer Figfeelings.

“When I spend too long on my phone, I feel overexcited later, not relaxed: agitated. After reading a book, I fell asleep,” he told Newsweek. “I am in front of the screens almost all day, so it is good to reward me with a timeless screen.”

The owner of the gallery thus created a program around political science, with a 4,000 -page text about the history of Palestine, Germany, Economics and Arts. She works a little every night, in terms of real tasks, therefore. “I am much more proud of what I did during the day,” she says. Above all, the young woman has considerably divided her screen time.
