They invented ChatGPT but they are the most feared in the world: only 10% of Americans are more excited than afraid about AI

Five in ten Americans say they are more worried than excited about the spread of AI in their daily lives, a higher share than any other country surveyed by the Pew Research Center.

The share of Americans who say they are concerned about the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in our daily lives is higher than in all other countries surveyed by the independent Pew Research Center for a study published Wednesday, October 15.

The largest companies in the sector are American, such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or Microsoft, but surprisingly the population is the most fearful.

Only 10% of Americans surveyed in this survey say they are “more excited than concerned” about the increased presence of AI in everyday life, while 50% express the opposite sentiment and 38% a balance between the two. For this survey, the Pew Research Center surveyed residents of 25 countries, including the world’s largest economies except Russia and China.

The French are average.

On average, concern dominates among only 34% of respondents, with South Korea coming in last at 16%. France is almost average (35% fear AI more than they welcome it).

In particular, in the United States, feelings about AI differ little between young people (47% concerned among those aged 18 to 34) and those aged 50 and older (54%). Only 44% of Americans say they have full or partial confidence in their country’s propensity to regulate the use of AI, while 47% say they have little or no faith in it.

Since taking office, Donald Trump has removed several obstacles to the development of generative AI and has advocated for minimal regulation, going so far as to try to prohibit American states from adopting restrictive laws in this area. Across all countries included in the study, the share of respondents who are somewhat or definitely convinced that the United States will impose limits on AI falls to 37%.

It is, on the other hand, 53% for the European Union, which, in fact, already adopted, in 2024, the most complete legislation in the world on this technology. The survey was carried out in several phases from January to June, among more than 35,000 people, by telephone or online.
