Snapchat, Prime Video, Fortnite… a massive Amazon Web Services outage disrupts many sites and services

This Monday, October 20, Amazon’s remote computing subsidiary suffered a significant drop that affected numerous services.

An important cut that affects many services. This Monday, October 20, many services are facing difficulties, as shown by Downdetector, the site that lists outage reports. Snapchat, Amazon, Roblox, Prime Video, Fortnite…. Several applications, streaming services and online games are affected.

These difficulties are related to the significant drop suffered by Amazon Web Services, the remote computing (cloud) subsidiary of the American giant, since this morning. On its site, it explains that it has observed “significant error rates on requests directed to the DynamoDB endpoint in the US East-1 region (Europe, Middle East and Africa, editor’s note).

Amazon Web Services later clarified that it had “identified a potential cause” of these error rates. “Based on our investigation, the issue appears to be related to DNS resolution of the DynamoDB API endpoint in the region,” the company said. As a reminder, DNS resolution is the process by which a domain name, here associated with an endpoint (such as mail.google.com), is translated into one or more IP addresses, which computers use to communicate with each other.

“We are working on several parallel tracks to accelerate recovery,” AWS added.
