AI: YouTube provides a tool to detect deepfakes of the faces and voices of content creators

The video platform is launching a new tool to allow content creators to better control their image and prevent AI-generated videos from using their face or voice. The feature, still in beta, obviously uses AI.

While Sora 2 attracts a lot of attention for its mistakes and its creations that usurp the identities of celebrities living or dead, YouTube aims to be the good student serving its community of content creators. The platform has put online a “similarity detection” tool.

An automated detector

Its purpose is to detect and designate videos that contain an unauthorized representation of your face or voice. Therefore, if you are a YouTuber and if another user creates a video that contains a deep fake of your face or generates a completely synthetic video in which a person looks like you, you should be detected and you should receive an alert.

YouTube explains on its support site that this new feature follows the same process as Content ID, which searches for unauthorized duplicate content even though it is protected by copyright. With the difference, however, that here it is the faces and voices that are studied in detail.

Furthermore, in a video dedicated to this feature, YouTube specifies that the tool is still in development. Therefore, it is possible for you to designate videos that contain your real face, coming, for example, from an excerpt from one of your videos.

A need for identification

Of course, to avoid abuse, content creators will first have to identify themselves with an identity document. They will then be able to go to a new tab of their channel management interface, in the Content Discovery section. In addition to the Copyright tab, you will find Similarity Detection. This tab will list the videos detected by Google AI.

This way you can ensure that the detection system has not made any errors. You can request that the video be removed because it uses your image or because it violates your copyright. It will also be possible to simply archive it so as not to keep track.

Requesting a removal does not automatically result in the removal of the video. In fact, the account that posted it is notified and can modify it, delete it, or do nothing. In this case, Youtube teams will be contacted to judge the relevance of the withdrawal. At each stage, the applicant will be informed of the progress of their application.

YouTube also indicates that it is possible to ask to leave this automatic similarity detection program. The request is generally effective within 24 hours.

And for the actors?

At the moment, YouTube is rolling out this new feature in stages. The first affected content creators should have received an email, and others should see the feature arrive in the coming months.

The question now is whether actors or celebrities will also be able to access these types of tools to delete videos in which they appear. In India, at the beginning of the month, Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, a couple of Bollywood stars, requested the removal of numerous AI-generated videos in which they appear in “sexually explicit” situations or “scandalous” content.
