ChatGPT Go, which is already affordable, will become even more affordable in India. Launched in August before being extended to other countries in Asia and Africa (Afghanistan, Cambodia, Egypt, Guinea), OpenAI’s low-cost subscription allows, for four euros per month, to benefit from certain advantages such as expanded access to the GPT-5 model, image generation or even greater memory to obtain more personalized responses.
But OpenAI has decided to go even further by offering a year of free access to ChatGPT Go to users, according to the specialized site Techcrunch. This offer will be available for a limited time starting November 4, the day the startup will hold its first event dedicated to developers in the country. And users who have already subscribed will also be eligible.
Race to conquer India
The fact that OpenAI is attacking India is not really surprising. With more than 1.4 billion inhabitants, it is the most populated country in the world. As Techcrunch points out, it also has more than 1 billion internet subscribers and more than 700 million smartphone users.
Earlier this year, company boss Sam Altman also revealed that India was its second-largest market after the United States. The AI specialist seeks to expand its presence in the country, so it opened a first office in New Delhi and expanded its local team with the aim of “better serving users and partners.”
OpenAI, however, is struggling to make money from its other subscriptions in India. In addition to ChatGPT Go, three other packages are also offered: Plus (23 euros per month), Pro (229 euros per month) and Business (29 euros per month) intended for companies. According to Appfigures figures relayed by Techcrunch, the ChatGPT app was downloaded more than 29 million times in the 90 days before ChatGPT Go launched in the country. However, it only generated $3.6 million in in-app purchases during this period.
Note that OpenAI is not the only company looking to conquer India. In July, Perplexity partnered with local operator Airtel to offer one year of free access to its subscription, Perplexity Pro ($20 per month), to its 360 million customers. The same month, Google also announced that Indian students will be able to use its AI Pro plan for free (21.99 euros per month). The race to conquer India and its users has begun.
