387,000 euros for a handful of curious: the evening of the metaverse of the European Commission becomes a fiasco

The “gala” organized by Brussels, the culmination of an expensive campaign, attracted almost no one.

If more proof was needed that the metaverse definitely doesn’t draw crowds, you had to attend the “gala”, organized in the metaverse by the European Commission, on November 29. Journalist Vince Chadwick did so, but quickly noted the lack of enthusiasm around the event, initially designed to attract 18-35 year olds. First accompanied by 5 people, he quickly found himself alone in the vast virtual ocean.

The evening might be anecdotal if it weren’t the culmination of what looks like a financial fiasco. This event would be used to promote a program of the European Commission, “Global Gateway”, a vast investment program -300 billion euros by 2027- to face the “most pressing global challenges”.

Except that this metaverse communication campaign still cost a total of 387,000 euros, according to the Devex site. Was the failure foreseeable? Only about forty people had “liked” the trailer before tonight, which is still very little on the scale of the continent.

In the European Commission’s defense, Facebook’s parent company Meta, which puts just about everything in its metaverse, has hardly been more successful with its virtual world that even its employees seem to be in a bad mood.
