Mastodon had quickly established itself, closely followed by Hive Social. As Elon Musk tries to impose his vision and shape the social network as he sees fit, Twitter has become a target for many similar apps. And even well-established platforms want their piece of the pie.
This is the case of Meta, owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Last month, the group held a meeting to figure out “how to build the new Twitter,” says the New York Times. It is noticeable that the employees of the pioneer of social networks do not lack ideas to nail the wings to their competitor.
A new Instagram feed soon?
In particular, the deployment, on a larger scale, of Instagram Note was proposed. This service allows users to share short texts visible for 24 hours with their relatives or people who follow them.
Within the conversation that the American newspaper was able to consult, there was also talk of creating a new text-focused application, which would take over the operation of Instagram. Or, more simply, adding a new feed to the platform, dedicated not to photos, but to written posts. Names have even been proposed: Realtime, Real Reels or Instant.
Among the smaller players who also want to take the place of Twitter is Post. Scott Galloway, platform investor and professor of marketing at New York University, explains: “The toxicity surrounding Twitter and certain behaviors of the new owner led me to believe that there is a great opportunity for a microblogging platform with a model of different business.”
The competition has understood. Mastodon saw their number of accounts increase by 33%. This figure even doubled for Hive Social. But with 6 million and 1.8 million users respectively, these alternatives don’t seem to be able to compete with Twitter and its more than 250 million active monetizable accounts.
