Animals aren’t the only ones who have fallen for Stray. This French video game was voted “best independent game” at the Game Awards. The first title from the French studio BlueTwelve marked the famous video game award ceremony.
“An incredible honor”
“Thank you very much, it’s an incredible honor”, reacted Swann Martin-Raget, producer of BlueTwelve, thanking the meeting “on behalf of the entire Montpellier team”. He greeted his family, friends but also the “obviously very important cats”, laughing.
Since its launch on July 19 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and PC, Stray’s video game, in which you play a cat, has become a phenomenon. Following its release, the French title generated hundreds of posts on Twitter showing the reaction of the cats to the images of the game.
A Twitter account, baptized stray looking cats, even arose to consolidate some of these reactions in one place. Created on July 15, he now has more than 36,000 subscribers thanks to sharing videos and photos of Caucasian cats, but also dogs, watching their master play Stray.
In this first game developed by BlueTwelve Studio, a Montpellier company, the player puts himself in the shoes of a stray cat. After a short introduction, the red cat finds himself trapped in the middle of a town populated by robots. It is then the beginning of many meetings with the inhabitants to develop the plot of the game.
Based on a puzzle system, Stray offers the player to collect items that must then be brought to the right person or traded for new ones. Nicknamed “FedEx quests” (referring to the delivery specialist), these missions are a great excuse to discover the 3D environment.
satisfying actions
The French developers were inspired by the cyberpunk universe for the aesthetics of the places. Therefore, it is a vertical architecture cradled in colored neon lights that the player must inspect. The beauty of the landscape invites you to walk and contemplate.
With its original concept of embodying a cat, the game published by Annapurna Interactive offers a range of particularly satisfying actions: meowing, scratching, playing with a ball or jumping inside a box. The player is also invited to use and abuse these actions to interact with the robots in the village.
Well received by critics, the game triumphs. Despite a story that is completed quickly (the game lasts 6-8 hours) and puzzles that are too simple, Stray offers a pleasant experience, ideal for relaxing during this holiday period.
