When TikTok opens, the first thing a user sees is the “For You” tab. And very often, this personalized content remains a mystery in the choice of featured videos. Tik Tok Now he wants to explain how the choice of this sometimes very vague selection works.
To do this, the platform announces the launch of a new function “to help users understand why a certain video has been recommended to them.” To find these details, the user must go to the “for you” tab, open the sharing panel of a clip, and press the question mark icon labeled “Why this video.” TikTok will then explain why the content appeared in the video. It could be because “this video is popular in your country” or because “you follow this person”.
Videos are automatically suggested in this tab based on different settings. The algorithm is refined also based on comments posted, searches performed, or content shared and liked.
The launch of this new function will take effect “in the coming weeks”, indicates TikTok without giving a precise date for the moment.
The social network is implementing new functions to demonstrate greater transparency with respect to its users. At the beginning of December, the Center for Combating Online Hate (CCDH), an American organization, published in particular a study that questions TikTok’s recommendation system: it takes a user no less than two minutes to view suggested content on weight loss or suicide.
