Impressions, likes, retweets: why has the display of interactions on Twitter changed?

The social network now shows the number of impressions created by a tweet. The order of the interaction buttons has also been changed.

There had to be a new (small) aesthetic change on Twitter after the true-false start of Elon Musk as head of the social network. The novelty this time lies in the visualization of the interactions: the comments, the likes (“I like”) and the retweets have seen their order of appearance changed. But the addition that attracted the most attention was the number of impressions, longed for by Musk himself. Namely, the number of times a tweet appeared in a platform user’s newsfeed.

Those who are interested in their audience on Twitter already knew about this tool, present in Twitter Analytics, but the general public much less so. This number of impressions (or views) should not be confused with the number of interactions, which indicates the number of clicks on a tweet, for example, to open it in its entirety.

From left to right…

Elon Musk defended the new addition, saying that seeing video view counts was considered normal and a similar evolution was needed for tweets. The head of Twitter also states that this “will show how Twitter is much more alive than it seems”, 90% of users only read tweets without interacting according to him.

Over the last few hours, the tweets in your news feed have improved (from left to right) with the number of impressions, replies, retweets, and then likes. However, the order is different on smartphones: you will always find the number of impressions first, but then the number of likes will be displayed, and then the retweets.

Ninth survey in progress

However, this new screen could be redesigned. As usual, Elon Musk has chosen to create a survey to find out the opinion of users. Therefore, the billionaire asked if the number of impressions should remain on the left, as it is currently done, or shift to the right.

At the moment, Internet users seem to favor a shift to the right, with 53.7%. Twitter is no longer just a change away.
