Apple will have to rework its crash detection feature once again. After confusing a roller coaster with a car accident, the iPhone 14 or the Apple Watch Series 8 seem to attract the ire of the ski resorts.
Several resorts, especially in Utah and Colorado in the United States, have noticed an increase in emergency calls from skiers present in these regions. Often useless calls as no accident actually occurs.
A miscalculated ski descent
It is the descent that would pose a problem. Going down a slope on skis would be considered by the feature as an accident. Several alerts would have been triggered by people just skiing, not realizing that their phone had called emergency services.
The technology used by Apple for its accident detection system is only supposed to notify car accidents. In the event of a collision, an alarm sounds on the device and the user must react in less than 20 seconds. If there is no answer, the phone automatically calls the emergency services and sends them the precise GPS coordinates.
3 to 5 calls per day
Suzie Butterfield, manager of a call center in Utah, told the US outlet KSL that she receives 3 to 5 calls a day from Apple devices. None of the calls were truly urgent.
The manager, however, indicated that the functionality should not be removed, because accidents can nevertheless happen, for example, with a skier crashing into a tree.
