TikTok better detects sexual content to protect young users

The application has implemented a new classification of its content. The goal is to prevent younger users from being exposed to videos aimed at a more mature audience.

Videos that are suggestive, sexual in nature, or contain adult innuendo. Adult content proliferates on TikTok. That is why the application has revised its classification system. The Chinese social network thus seeks to prevent a young user from facing images that are not appropriate for her age.

One million discarded videos of the youngest

TikTok has announced that a new version of its “cap” content detection tool is now in use. These types of videos do not directly violate the moderation rules of the platform, but they are not suitable for all audiences. Now, the process is automated through the use of “machine learning”.

Therefore, content identified as inappropriate for young users should no longer be visible to 13-17 year olds. TikTok has also congratulated itself on preventing teen accounts from viewing more than a million “sexually suggestive” videos during the month of December.

A partnership with StopNCII has also been concluded, to limit the proliferation of images of a sexual nature. This organization fights to prevent the abuse of intimate images, but also to make amends by seeking to delete intimate images posted online without consent.

A bill to ban the app

In addition, the creators themselves are encouraged to mention directly when putting their content online whether it is suitable for everyone or only for adult users.

In the United States, voices are raised to prohibit the use of the Chinese social network in the United States. A bill to this effect was introduced in December. Republican Congressman Mike Gallagher even compares the app to “digital fentanyl,” a powerful opioid.

In early December, the French president had also criticized TikTok. Emmanuel Macron had indicated that the network was “the first (psychological) disruptor” among children and adolescents.
