CES 2023: Withings presents a connected sensor to analyze your urine

With U-Scan, the French Withings challenges the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas. It reveals a urinalysis device that sits directly on the toilet bowl.

For several years, Withings has positioned itself in the health niche. Known for its connected watches, the French company now wants to revolutionize its bathrooms with a device that is turning heads at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The U-Scan device offers to analyze the urine of its user directly at home.

Different cartridges for specific analyzes

So the company worked for four years and filed thirteen families of patents to develop “the first non-invasive connected urinalysis laboratory.” Placed in the toilet bowl, the device consists of two parts: a reader, which collects the urine, and a cartridge system that analyzes it.

Both types of cartridges will be available at product launch. The first will be devoted to food analysis and will determine the impact of nutritional and water intake on metabolism. Based on the results, the Withings application will give advice, such as recipes or activities, to achieve the goals set by the user.

The second cartridge will be used for the analysis of menstrual cycles. This time, the company’s desire is to “relieve the mental load that accompanies monthly hormonal fluctuations,” says Morgane Descat. It will allow all users to know where they are in their cycle based on hormone detection. All while continuing to provide essential hydration and nutrition facts.

The device should go on the market in the second half of 2023 in Europe for almost 500 euros. For use in the United States, authorization from the Federal Health Agency (FDA) is still pending.
