Back to square one for Twitter. Under the leadership of Elon Musk, the social network will finally allow political ads again, after a three-year hiatus.
“We believe that cause-based advertising can facilitate public debate on important issues,” the company said, adding that the authorization for political advertising will take effect “in the coming weeks.”
This decision comes as the new owner of Twitter, Elon Musk, has multiplied controversial initiatives since the acquisition last November.
If the return of political ads responds to the mantra of the billionaire, who demands more freedom of expression in his network, it will mainly increase the income of the company. Between a fierce cost hunt and the implementation of a controversial subscription, Twitter is trying to generate more revenue.
rise of extremes
Political ads had been banned on Twitter since 2019. Former CEO Jack Dorsey said that “the reach of a political message should be earned, not bought.”
This course of conduct is still listed on the site, even in its French version. “This policy prohibits ads that contain references to political content, including, but not limited to, calls to vote, requests for financial assistance, and advocating for or against the aforementioned types of political content,” Twitter’s guidelines describe.
With two years to go until the next US presidential election, the return of political ads could well mark a turning point for a network increasingly criticized for a resurgence of extremist content found there.
