The year 2023 promises to be a tense one for Twitter. Taken over by Elon Musk last October, the social network has made a strategic shift by drastically reducing its operating costs. While a fair number of employees left the group, the moderation department also suffered from the cuts, raising concern among observers.
This Saturday, the French Minister Delegate for the Digital Transition, Jean-Noël Barrot, announced in a tweet that he had met with Elon Musk, in San Francisco, shortly after his visit to CES in Las Vegas.
“At the Twitter headquarters, Elon Musk confirmed to me his intention to comply with European standards and his commitments on content moderation, the fight against misinformation and the protection of children,” he wrote, a photo of the meeting in support.
The issue of respect for European legislation is a sensitive issue between Twitter and the old continent. Already after the announcement of its takeover, the European commissioner Thierry Breton had warned that the social network had to follow the new European regulations.
The Digital Services Regulation (DSA), published in October in the Official Journal of the EU, will apply from the beginning of 2024. It will require the rapid removal of any illegal content (in accordance with national and European laws) as soon as a platform will know about it. It will also force social networks to suspend users who “frequently” break the law.
Last December, it was Emmanuel Macron who exchanged with Elon Musk on the issue.
