Schools, high schools, universities… how national education is dealing with ChatGPT

The OpenAI chatbot is now used by pupils and students for study work. At the moment, the Ministries of National Education and Higher Education are not concerned.

A few seconds of reflection… and here is a complete dissertation. Or a math problem solved step by step. Or a complete bibliography of an academic topic. Opened to the general public last December, the ChatGPT chatbot is already making waves in schools around the world.

In Lyon, a university speaker, for example, found himself in front of a dozen copies generated by the revolutionary OpenAI tool. He realized this by noticing similarities in the work, but all different, until one of the students ended up revealing the pot of roses.

This example is probably far from unique. In New York, schools simply banned the use of ChatGPT on their private network. A last resort since students can use it at home…

Stained!

In France, the Ministry of National Education – in charge of schools, colleges and secondary schools – claims to follow “this issue and the possible uses of this innovation carefully”. Because the tool is not relevant “neither to do homework, nor to progress”, continues the ministry with Tech&Co.

However, no particular measure has been put in place to deal with it, particularly because the teachers “know their students, their style, their level,” they say in the ministry.

Nothing new under the sun?

On the side of the Ministry of Higher Education, the unidentified intelligent object is also closely watched. “Fraud has always existed and it has always adapted to new technologies, however we noticed it in the minister’s environment. In the end it was the same question 20 years ago when the web or Wikipedia”.

And it is true that, if the Internet has become a classic tool for students, it is useless in face-to-face exams and it does not allow you to build reasoning either. Also, if ChatGPT is particularly impressive, it still doesn’t fool teachers.

When asked by BFMTV about an essay plan produced by ChatGPT, a philosophy professor was unequivocal: “a plan that is ultimately very contrived that doesn’t reflect reflection.”

Despite his progress, ChatGPT will have to complete his studies before he can really sound the alarm in the world of education.
