‘Shit’: Singer Nick Cave criticizes ChatGPT’s song written in his style

Nick Cave was asked to react to a song written by ChatGPT. Artificial intelligence had been asked to imitate the Australian artist’s style. The result has no more for the interested party.

Singer Nick Cave obviously did not appreciate ChatGPT’s talent. Artificial intelligence can generate texts on almost any topic. But OpenAI’s creation is also capable of imitating people. This is what a New Zealander did. A fan of the Australian artist, he asked the tool to write a song in the singer’s style before sending him the result.

In his latest newsletter, Nick Cave reacted to text generated by ChatGPT. One thing is certain, the singer is not a fan of artificial intelligence. According to him, “writing a song is not mimicry, nor a replica, nor a pastiche, it’s the complete opposite”. However, it is for mimicry that ChatGPT wrote the song about him.

“The Emerging Horror of AI”

In its creation, ChatGPT used dark Biblical imagery, especially to write the song’s refrain: “I am the sinner, I am the saint / I am the darkness, I am the light / I am the hunter, I am the prey / I am the devil, I am the Savior”.

The artist felt that ChatGPT performed a “replication as parody” exercise. He said he didn’t share “the same enthusiasm around this technology.” Nick Cave gave a clear opinion on artificial intelligence that “is in its infancy.”

“Perhaps this is the emerging horror of artificial intelligence, it will always be in its infancy,” he wrote on his site. “We can never reverse it, or slow it down, because it is leading us towards a utopian future, perhaps, or towards our total destruction. Who can know?”, explains the singer.

Focusing on the song written by ChatGPT imitating him, Nick Cave has been pessimistic for the moment: “The apocalypse is on the way. This song sucks.”
