Olympic Games 2024: the CNIL opposes facial recognition for video surveillance systems

Surveillance camera systems using artificial intelligence may be installed for the 2024 Olympics, but the digital data broker cautions against using facial recognition.

The Senate is examining from this January 24 the bill related to the 2024 Olympic Games focused on security. The text provides, in particular, for the creation of an automated video surveillance system using artificial intelligence. This Tuesday, the National Commission for Informatics and Liberties (CNIL) called on parliamentarians not to introduce facial recognition when examining the text.

Specifically, surveillance camera systems will be able to use artificial intelligence with an algorithm capable of detecting the movement of a crowd, an abandoned package or even a person with abnormal behavior. Thus, artificial intelligence will be able to analyze, detect and report certain behaviors or suspicious objects in real time. This system, which would also be present in drones, aims to help law enforcement to make decisions.

As for the use of recognition in video surveillance, the Senate Law Committee rejected a first amendment, but such a proposal may emerge during debates in Parliament.

invited to the microphone France News On January 24, Marie-Laure Denis, president of the CNIL challenges parliamentarians and invites them “not to introduce facial recognition. The public space is a place where many public liberties are exercised, the freedom of demonstration, of worship and others, ”she continues her. .

“It will not be an open bar”

For the CNIL, the use of AI in these systems is a turning point. He plans to support the system in particular in the control of the algorithms: “we are going to see if the data used by these algorithms is reliable, relevant and above all so that there are no biases or errors (…) it will not be an ‘open bar'”, he wishes clarify Marie-Laure Denis in France Info.

The experiment will start before the Olympic Games, probably with the Rugby World Cup in September, and will continue until June 2025. During the Olympic Games, the surveillance system will be installed in sports stadiums and near the transport that serves these venues.

The implementation of a system of this type represents a great opportunity for companies in the sector, many of them French: giants such as Thales or Ineo, but also young start-ups such as XXII, Wintics or Foxstream.
