Are we going to attend an unpacking at the GTA V? As with the future Rockstar Games video game, a malicious person has taken the source code of several Riot Games titles. The publisher announced on Tuesday, January 24, that the source code for its game League of Legends it was stolen last week.
The best-selling publisher, also known for its shooter. valorantindicated that the cyberattack affects another title in its catalogue: Team Fight Tactics. Additionally, Riot Games has received a ransom demand. “It goes without saying that we are not going to pay,” the company decided on Twitter.
Assess the impact on deception
To carry out their theft, the cybercriminals used a well-recognized technique: social engineering. It consists of coming into contact with a person who has access to information to manipulate it psychologically in order to recover it.
In addition to the two source codes, the crooks gained access to an anti-cheat platform. Therefore, the publisher is particularly attentive to the activity in its games. “Since the attack, we have been working to assess its impact on cheat protection and be ready to implement fixes as quickly as possible if necessary.” states Riot Games.
Unlike the misadventures of GTA V, the idea is not to leak images of an upcoming game. League of Legends was released in October 2009 and Teamfight Tactics has been available since June 2019. However, some features still under study are present in the source code.
No personal data stolen
The publisher ensures that no personal data has been stolen. Audits are underway to verify the status of their systems and better assist in the ongoing investigation. Riot Games promises to publish a detailed report on the techniques used by the attackers and the areas where the company’s security has failed.
