It is no longer possible to confuse two characters on Twitter. At least within a username. Since January 26, the company has changed the font of the account label (the identifier that begins with an “@”). For now, this change has only been observed in the web version of the social network.
The change might have gone unnoticed. As The Verge points out, the account Twitter Help did not mention the subject. However, it is through this that many announcements about additions or modifications of functions and use are made.
too many similarities
It was directly the users who highlighted the new font. Specifically, the letters “l” now have rounding at the bottom and the numbers “0” appear crossed out. These seemingly innocuous modifications will help to avoid excessive similarities between the characters.
The similarities between the lowercase “l” and uppercase “i” or uppercase “o” and the numbers “0” had caused Twitter moderation some cold sweats, ever since they were hit hard by the layoffs. On November 10, when Elon Musk first made paid certification available, numerous impersonations were committed thanks to these hard-to-distinguish characters.
Since this episode, the platform has revised its policy around your Twitter Blue subscription. Elon Musk had ensured that to avoid this type of problem, a manual verification of all accounts would be carried out before awarding them the blue certification badge.
At the moment, Twitter has not provided any information to suggest that the font of usernames will also be changed in the social network’s applications.
