United States: Apple and Google under pressure to ban TikTok from their app stores

In a letter to the heads of the two tech giants, a US senator calls for the immediate removal of TikTok from the App Store and Google Play Store. One more step in the fight between China and the United States.

How long will TikTok survive on US soil? This is the question that arises when a US senator calls on Apple and Google to remove the Chinese social network from their app stores.

In fact, Michael Bennett, a Democratic senator, sent an open letter to Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, and Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, to communicate his desire that TikTok not be available for download, both in the App Store and on Google Play. Store.

100 million users on the other side of the Atlantic

In his letter, the senator mainly expressed his fears for the social network, the third most used platform in the United States, with 100 million monthly active users.

“About 36% of Americans ages 12 and older use TikTok today, and 61% of those ages 12-24. On average, US TikTok users spend 80 minutes a day on the app, more than Facebook and Instagram combined,” Michael explained. Bennett.

At the heart of the problem in the eyes of more and more American elected officials lies in the data collection carried out by the Chinese giant, accused of providing this information to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

Michael Bennet described TikTok as an “unacceptable threat to the security of the country,” noting that no company “subject to the CCP should have the power to amass so much data on the American people.”

the tension rises

This is a new stage in the fight between the United States and China. Several American universities have already decided to ban the Chinese social network in their establishments. The US House of Representatives has also decided to ban TikTok on all of its work phones.

Next step that could seal the fate of TikTok on US soil: TikTok boss Shou Zi Chew’s hearing by the US Congress on March 23. The Chinese leader will be questioned in particular about the impact of the actions of the social network on the private lives of Americans.
