Saint-Etienne: the pizza man suspected of belonging to the mafia recognized by facial recognition

Edgardo Greco, suspected of belonging to the Calabrian mafia, was arrested on Thursday in Saint-Etienne. It was a photo published in the local newspaper Le Progrès that allowed Interpol to find him.

Is the photo too much for Edgardo Greco? Published in July 2021 in the newspaper ProgressHe offers a slightly concerned look and a contained smile. You may already know that this shot is not necessarily a good idea.

As a caption, the journalist gives the floor to the Italian “chef” who later calls himself Paolo Dimitrio. No one suspects that it is this same photo that will allow Interpol to trace the true identity of the pizzaiölo from Saint-Étienne, suspected of being an Italian mobster who has been wanted for 16 years.

Therefore, using this banal press photo, investigators were finally able to track down this suspected mobster.

Interpol in the hunt for the digital mafia

As Tech&Co explained last month, Interpol relies heavily on technology and algorithms to fight the Calabrian mafia, nicknamed ‘Ndrangheta. The international criminal police organization is notably developing a tool to identify suspicious transactions whose patterns closely resemble those of the mafia.

Edgardo Greco, sentenced to life imprisonment in 2006 in Italy for homicides, and living in France that same year, should be extradited to Italy.
