Despite the dramatic earthquake that struck Turkey overnight from Sunday to Monday, local authorities will not agree to grant an operating license to Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet service. The information is revealed by the American media Bloomberg, which cites an official source who wishes to remain anonymous.
Starlink in Iran and Ukraine
Given the extensive damage caused by the earthquake to the Turkish communications infrastructure, in particular that used by the emergency services, Elon Musk was questioned on Twitter about possible help from Starlink, marketed by SpaceX.
According to Bloomberg, the official Turkish source assures that the country has sufficient satellite communications capacity to cope with the situation and that the authorities can count on generators in the event of a power outage.
Turkey is not the first country where Elon Musk has offered help to Starlink. He recently made his tool available to opponents of the regime in Iran, having greatly assisted Ukraine against Russia after the invasion began in February 2022.
